In this inspiring episode, we welcomed 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿, a board-certified music therapist and founder of Bridgetown Music Therapy. Alexis’s journey is a testament to the power of music in healing and connecting people, especially those living with dementia—her passion for music therapy and heartwarming dedication to helping others shine brightly.

Meet Alexis and Her Journey

Alexis’s love for music began early in her life. Growing up in a musical family, she started piano lessons at the age of eight but soon discovered her true passion for the guitar at ten. Music not only helped her overcome shyness but also became a source of confidence and self-expression. Her journey into music therapy was sparked when she was 16, after learning about its potential to make a difference in people’s lives. This realization was further expressed by her grandmother’s experience with Alzheimer’s disease, which showed her the profound impact music can have on individuals with dementia.

In 2020, she moved her business online because of the COVID-19 pandemic. She teamed up with her skilled videographer husband to create something unique. Together, they started Bridgetown’s Virtual Music Engagement Program with just a few videos. Today, it offers hundreds of music sessions that people can access anytime. The program is designed to help people with dementia and their caregivers through activities like singing, movement, stretching, and playing instruments. Alexis includes various music styles and themes, making it enjoyable for everyone. Her work has been praised as a game-changer for those living with dementia and their care teams.

Music therapists often face significant challenges in gaining recognition and establishing successful careers. Despite their dedication, they are frequently undervalued and overlooked, making it difficult to build sustainable businesses. Advocating for the profession is essential to raising awareness of its value. Music therapy goes beyond creativity—it involves expertise, systematic assessments, and goal-oriented interventions that contribute to meaningful change.
